How Anime has changed over the last 20 years
Animation and Japanese Anime has changed considerably over the last two decades. With new art styles as well as changing technology it's now possible to produce Anime which is of a much higher quality. With many titles that have been rebooted and even continued over the past 20 years, it is incredible to see how anime has changed.
The art style: art style has changed to suit the times. In the 1990s for example anime tend to have more shadow, defined lines, greater highlights and different types of facial features. When we look at many modern animate characters from 2010 and beyond we start to see that shadows have been simplified, highlights are less defined, the eyes and pupils are softer and facial features have been changed to appear much softer and more human like.
The fine details: finer details are now possible through the use of digital art and HD formats. There is a greater demand for including extra textures and details with anime and this can often produce a much more polished look. Although this can be more difficult for animators, the tools available are much easier to work with than traditional cell shading and episodes can be created almost entirely digital for use.
The marketplace: The marketplace and demand for Anime and this style of entertainment has also changed remarkably over the last 20 years. With globalization and the widespread use of the internet, more people are seeking out anime and watching it regularly. Major Anime titles now appear on streaming services like Netflix and more to give people easy access to titles. Anime video games and other content are also much more widely sold worldwide.
As you can see, the nature of Anime has changed considerably over the last 20 years. With popularity set to increase, it should be only a matter of time until we see another major shift in the market.
